ALDOT Helps Drivers Prepare for Holiday Travel
Top Two Ways to Stay Safe on the Road; Current Alabama Road Advisories
(Montgomery, Ala.) – Drivers planning to be on Alabama roads during the Christmas and New Year holidays should expect increased traffic and allow extra time to reach their destination. With the number of year-end holiday travelers projected to top 100 million for the first time on record*, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) encourages drivers to remember two key ways to arrive safely:
- Don’t drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Wear a seatbelt.
Motorists are four times more likely to die in a crash when driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is involved, as shown in studies sponsored by ALDOT. Designating a sober driver before drinking is key to preventing these deadly crashes.
Surviving a crash is more likely when wearing a seat belt. Latest stats from Drive Safe Alabama show that almost 60 percent of people killed on Alabama highways were not wearing seat belts.
To better handle increased traffic and for the safety of travelers, construction industry workers and maintenance crews, ALDOT announced today there would be no temporary lane closures on Alabama interstates after noon, Wednesday, December 23, through midnight, Sunday, December 27, 2015, and after noon, Wednesday, December 30, 2015 through midnight, Friday, January 1, 2016.
